Hannah Woodman workshop: Loosening up the landscape. THIS WORKSHOP IS FULL

In this workshop we will explore ways in which a freer approach to landscape painting can be achieved. With demos and discussions along the way, we’ll consider the following fundamentals of expressive painting and how we can manipulate them to try and elicit a more emotional response in our work:

  • Form and simplification
  • Composition and immersion
  • Colour and theory
  • Mark making and expression

The day will begin with experimental drawing techniques to help free up our initial approach, followed by painting sessions that consider the above topics. The aim is to achieve sensation and ambiguity in our work without total abstraction.

Materials required:

  1. Set of pencils from HB to 9B
  2. Erasers with a hard edge (for creating thin lines when rubbing out)
  3. Soft Graphite stick up to 9B (optional)
  4. Watercolour paper sketchbook or block A4 or similar – I prefer smooth hot pressed paper but cold pressed with a slight texture is fine. It does need to be a minimum of 300gsm in weight though (as heavy as possible is good).
  5. Watercolour set with a range of colours – I prefer tubes, but pans are fine. If possible try and include the following or similar colours:
  • Raw umber
  • French ultramarine
  • Sap green
  • Cadmium yellow
  • Indian Red
  • Yellow ochre
  • Turquoise or cobalt blue
  1. One tube of white gouache (if you have other gouache colours please bring them too)
  2. Three watercolour brushes in different shapes and sizes to experiment – I suggest a round head brush of approx. 1cm, a square headed brush of approx. 2 cm and a larger 4cm brush of your choice for loading up paint and covering bigger areas.
  3. A few hard chalk pastels in bright colours
  4. Tissue rolls for blotting
  5. Palettes for mixing on

Please note, students are welcome to bring their own photos to work from, but I’ll also provide printed landscape images.

Booking will give the message that you have to be a member of Topsham Art Group for this event, but the workshop is part of Topsham Art Festival and open to all.
